Refugee Services

In 2015, the Schaberg Foundation became aware of the large number of refugees resettled in Henrico’s West End. While services were available, there were limited collaborations and a lack of shared information. The Foundation brought these nonprofit leaders together, along with interested volunteers, faith communities, and members of the refugee community, and a network grew and leadership emerged. Much has changed in the refugee community since that time. In 2022, over 1,000 refugees resettled in Richmond, which more than triples the number of refugees who resettled the previous year. Most of these individuals were evacuated from Afghanistan, however, our community is also seeing a growing number of Ukrainian refugees. With this recent growth we have an opportunity to again convene stakeholders and develop a regional strategic plan for the refugee system of care.
